Leuser Ecosystem

The Leuser Ecosystem in Sumatra, Indonesia, is a forest like no other. It is the ONLY place on Earth where rhinos, tigers, orangutans, and elephants are still found together in the wild.

Sourcing for paper products, pulp for textiles, and palm oil all place massive stresses on Indonesia’s rainforests, communities, and animals.

The Leuser Ecosystem’s most iconic species are under threat. Sumatran tigers, elephants, and rhinos are all critically endangered due in large part to habitat loss. Learn how we’re working to reverse that trend.

Twenty-seven First Nations call this part of the coast home, their cultures evolving alongside of the landscape.

Making a difference

Canopy works with local governments, forest communities, and decision-makers in Aceh province on the island of Sumatra to establish a conservation-based economy that works for people and the forest. From bringing an Aceh delegation to the Great Bear Rainforest to hear Indigenous leaders share their knowledge about the economic benefits of conservation, to leading our brand partners to donate to conservation projects, to collaborating with frontline allies on the ground, Canopy is active on many fronts to secure lasting conservation for this important landscape.
Canopy is working alongside local leaders and NGOs to protect all 2.6 million hectares of the Leuser Ecosystem and the magic it holds.

Biodiversity Havens:

The Sumatran orangutan is a critically endangered primate that relies on ‌dense tropical rainforests for its survival. The vast majority of the world’s remaining Sumatran orangutan population is found inside the lush habitat provided by the Leuser Ecosystem. Orangutans’ existence is deeply intertwined with the health of this unique rainforest.
